Stefan Fors is a sociologist and has a PhD in social work from Stockholm University. His research concerns the social determinants of health in later life.  In his studies he has explored the associations between social and economic conditions experienced throughout the life course and health in later life. The results show substantial and pervasive social differences in health and risk of mortality in later life. Individuals that are, or have been earlier in life, exposed to social and/or economic deprivation have a higher risk of health problems, mortality, as well as impaired physical and cognitive functioning in later life.

Parallel to his work on health inequalities, he has also published papers on survey methodology and intergenerational family relations.
