2011-09-28 "Consumers of eldercare in Sweden: The semblance of choice" ARC researchers publish op-ed piece in Dagens Nyheter
In a recent study, ARC researchers Bettina Meinow, Marti Parker and Mats Thorslund found that slightly more than half of persons aged 77 and older in Sweden lack certain abilities that are important for making choices about who will provide them with medical and social services. These older people may not be able to play the part of rational and well-informed consumers. Combined with the lack of information available about care services, the authors warn that expecting eldercare to be self-correcting by introducing more market-based policies is problematic. The study is available online in the journal Social Science & Medicine, link to abstract

Brain training increases dopamine release
Updating of working memory has been associated with striato-frontal brain regions and phasic dopaminergic neurotransmission. We assessed raclopride binding to striatal dopamine (DA) D2 receptors during a letter-updating task and a control condition before and after 5 weeks of updating training. Results showed that updating affected DA activity before training and that training further increased striatal DA release during updating. These findings highlight the pivotal role of transient neural processes associated with D2 receptor activity in working memory
